WHAT IS A PLAYMAKER?
We coined the term in response to the common conception of an organization’s “staff” -- the key difference being that our Playmakers, including our Producing Artistic Director, have not yet been able to take a single dollar in salary, and in fact have continued to work full time day jobs, as we’ve poured every single dollar we raise into supporting our creative teams and the work you see on stage.
We Playmakers wear many hats -- all of them, in fact. And while it may be hard to understand, we go to our full-time jobs, catch a quick dinner break, then head to the theatre for our work. We rotate administrative and management roles so that when we act, direct, design, stage manage, or write, we can focus on the art, and vice versa.
We started this company completely from scratch and run virtually every aspect of its operations. Between us, we have a baker's dozen of MFA's and BFA's, all in theatre-related fields, from schools like Brown University, Boston College, CalArts, and the BU School of Theatre. We've also worked a lot professionally, at theatres like the Huntington, New Rep, Trinity Rep, and Actors' Shakespeare Project, just to name a few.
